Regional and Sub-Regional Capacity-Building Workshops
An early core activity of the JBF was a series of regional and sub-regional capacity building workshops to support Parties to revise their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in alignment with the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. These workshops also provided a general introduction to key COP10 outcomes such as the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress, and the Strategic Plan for the Biosafety Protocol.
Between 2011 and 2012, 15 regional and sub-regional workshops on NBSAP revision were delivered. An additional 7 workshops on national target setting, mainstreaming, policy and legal aspects of NBSAP adoption and resource mobilization were delivered between 2011 and 2013. The workshops were delivered by the Secretariat (including JBF team) in collaboration with and with participation of indigenous peoples and local communities, civil society organizations, women's groups, academic and business representatives, and international organizations. For more details on these workshops, please visit the NBSAP Capacity Building Workshops page.
A Global Workshop on reviewing progress and building capacity for the NBSAP revision, was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2013. This workshop was a follow up to the regional workshops and focused on the three aspects of NBSAP planning and development that were identified as the most in need of capacity-building and technical support: resource mobilization and valuation, mainstreaming, and national target setting. A special segment on gender mainstreaming was also included.
In 2013-2014, the JBF supported a series of Regional Workshops for the Preparation of the Fifth National Reports. Eight workshops were organized by the Secretariat to facilitate the preparation and submission of Fifth National Reports in time for review by COP12, and to contribute to the development of the Global Biodiversity Outlook 4 (GBO-4).
