Invasive Alien Species

CBD Toolkit for Target 6

Invasive Alien Species’ Toolkit for Target 6 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Following the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Parties requested the Executive Secretary to develop advice, in collaboration with the Inter-Agency Liaison Group on invasive alien species, on the evaluation of existing capacity and needs for monitoring, preventing and controlling the introduction and spread of invasive alien species and their harmful effects on biodiversity, taking into account relevant multilateral instruments, and thereafter as relevant, update the CBD online toolkit on invasive alien species that was developed to support Parties in implementing Aichi Target 9 (available below). In response to this request, the CBD Secretariat in cooperation with IUCN and the Inter-Agency Liaison Group on invasive alien species, is developing a non-prescriptive toolkit that provides new information in line with Target 6.

The toolkit to support the implementation of Target 6 will be available here soon.

A toolkit to support Parties to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 on invasive alien species

This prototype toolkit is made available for the purpose of facilitation of achieving Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 on invasive alien species.

This toolkit explains the international agreements related to invasive alien species, primarily stipulated in Article 8h of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as other multilateral agreements related to health of plants, animals and humans, for Parties to the CBD to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 with examples of implementation in different countries. This toolkit is not intended to be prescriptive.

Status of this toolkit: This version is a prototype for review by Parties, organizations and other users. Should you find incorrect information or have requests on this toolkit, please inform to to [email protected] with concrete information to be reflected in the toolkit. • To lay out guidance on risks associated with live species trade (Module 4)
  • To provide guidelines on risks associated with common pathways and their management (Module 5)
  • To further share information on opportunities for capacity development
  • This non-prescriptive toolkit is produced by the Secretariat of the CBD, in collaboration with relevant organizations, in response to decisions: IX/4B, X/28.

Acknowledgements

The Global Invasive Alien Species Information Partnership has disseminated information that may support Parties to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 on invasive alien species with generous financial support from the European Union. Some of the information was disseminated at the 17th meeting of SBSTTA and Capacity building workshops for Parties to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 9. The feedback from the users of earlier disseminations, as well as suggested information by the GIASI Partnership, were incorporated to this toolkit. The reviewers of this toolkit (Prototype):
