22 May 2010, International Day for Biodiversity: Celebrations in Bakingili.
On the International Day for Biodiversity, the Bakingili Community Forest had several excursions set up for the participants. Nine groups ranging from trees, reptiles/amphibians, birds and butterflies were created. Before the participants went on their treks, they had a visit from the local mayor who welcomed them to the region. The visitors went on various different walks, depending on the group they had chosen. Later, all participants met and discussed the findings from their trips. Virtually all groups found that many of the species from their group were difficult to find. Many of the experts believe that this is due to excess deforestation and the expansion of farms in the region. These observations bring to light the importance of species conservation in the area.
