South Africa
On 21 May, the
Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) hosted a workshop for teachers in the Umgeni Valley. Teachers were encouraged to come up with ways to include lessons about biodiversity into their class lessons. Thirty-one teachers took part in this half day event.
On 22 May, WESSA organized a main event which involved the general public and took place at the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve. All participants were able to enjoy lectures and stories from experts in a wide variety of biodiversity and nature fields. Activities were tailored for both young and old alike.
Between 20 and 25 May activities for primary school children were also organized by WESSA. Children from several schools participated in indentifying the multitude of species found in their region. The children also participated in studying the invertebrates found in the river water to identify the water quality in that region.
