  Celebrating Singapore's BioDiversity!
This blog hopes to do just this by featuring news, events, articles and other information about our biodiversity.

Greetings from Underwater World Singapore (UWS)!
Situated on Sentosa Island of Singapore, UWS is an oceanarium showcasing some 2500 marine life from 250 species from around the regions. Since our opening in 1991, we have received close to 30 million visitors. Over the years, UWS has sought to raise public awareness on marine conservation issues via our educational exhibits, enriching educational programs and various ongoing conservation projects with other partners and institutions. We consider it an important responsibility of ours, as an oceanarium, to inspire our visitors to do their part to conserve the fragile marine environment. Our very own conservation slogan: Blue Mission - Inspire, Educate, Conserve, represents aptly this vision and the work that we strive to do.

As you can imagine, we are thrilled that the International Year of Biodiversity – 2010 is just round the corner. In support of the International Year of Biodiversity, we’re lining up a series of exhibits and educational programmes that would educate our guests, schools and the public about the wonders of marine life and the urgency for biodiversity conservation. In fact, our International Year of Biodiversity event calendar starts from November 2009 – part of the Countdown to usher in 2010.

Below is a sampling of the International Year of Biodiversity calendar:
19 Nov 09 – Award Presentation Ceremony for Young Marine Biologist Award for the 2009 Competition titled “Journalists for the Environment – Extinction is Forever”.

24 Nov 09 – Launch of the Shark Conservation Workshop and Feed the Shark Programme at UWS Shark Nursery which houses 5 species of baby sharks – showcasing UWS’ successful shark breeding programmes.

Guest of Honour (Tentative): Professor Leo Tan, Educational Advisory Panel, UWS & Director (Special Projects), National University of Singapore.

World Cities Summit

www.worldcities.com.sg
World Cities Summit is a premier event that brings together practitioners and policy makers with leading experts in their field to identify innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges facing cities today. The inaugural summit in June 2008 brought together 800 senior delegates including leaders, mayors, policy makers and the civil society. To build on its success, the next Summit in 2010 will offer a strategic platform comprising a high-level summit, plenary sessions, networking forums and technical workshops.

The theme for the second Summit is Liveable and Sustainable Cities for the Future. World Cities Summit 2010 will be a three-day event (28 Jun - 1 Jul) focusing on leadership and governance and building liveable and sustainable communities. Through the exchange of ideas and knowledge, cities can learn from each other to create a good environment that is sustainable and forward-looking.
