Biodiversity Conservation in Portugal: passed or failed?
Campaign for schools
As part of the celebrations of the International Year of Biodiversity, SPEA is launching an initiative with schools in order to stimulate critical thinking, and increase the feelings of citizenship for matters relating to this subject. Thus, SPEA is challenging schools to examine the role played by Portugal in terms of conservation of Biodiversity in the last 10 years and suggests them to give their evaluation. Mainly, if they considered that the result was positive (passed) or negative (lead). Schools can also participate by sending a letter addressed to Portuguese MEPs about this matter.
This action is to make aware the Portuguese MEPs of the importance of safeguarding biodiversity and the need to increase the level of investment on it. It is also expected to contribute positively to the UN General Assembly on 20 September 2010.

International Art Contest The theme is the International Year of Biodiversity. Children and youth (up to 18 years) may only use drinkable or biological dyes and inks for their artworks. The 1st prizes of the two categories, children up to 12 and children up to 18, will be published in National Geographic Magazine, among others. More details on the website or in PDF. The International Art Contest is part of the Earth Day Celebrations: Urban ecological strolls: walking and observing; Is my City a Botanical Garden?: photos/drawings, picking up leafs, seeds, bark to identify species;. Is my school a biodiversity black spot?: setting traps to capture insects, worms and other creatures to be identified, classified and set free; "Am I part of the Biodiversity?": reflecting upon our role as a specie and our ecological habitat. Fundraising recital for the Campaign "Building a School, Building a Future", featuring Stella Mendonça On 7 May 2010, a recital by the soprano Stella Mendonça will be held at the Teatro Circo in Braga, Portugal, a fundraising event for the Campaign "Building a School, building a Future". This campaign aims to raise funds for building a school in the Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique.

Stations of Biodiversity
The stations of Biodiversity are public paths, with a maximum length of 3 km, marked on the ground with information panels about the biological diversity to be observed by visitors. Each station is located in a place of high species richness and landscape, representative of habitats characteristic of the area. During the year 2010, it will be inaugurated 20 Stations of Biodiversity in various regions of mainland Portugal.

Program EvoS
The theory of Darwin's natural selection explains the evolution of all biological diversity on Earth. However, this theory is scarcely known by the ordinary citizen. The program EvoS, which was initially launched in the U.S. by David Sloan Wilson, provides seminars and other training and information about the evolution to a wide audience The Center for Environmental Biology at University of Lisbon is the organizer of the program Evos in Portugal and will launch this program in the academic year of 2010-11.

Young scientists from UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) explore biodiversity Biodiversity and Sustainability was the subject of the 12th International Meeting of Young Scientists of the UNESCO Associated Schools, held in Santarém, Portugal, from 13 to 16 January. The meeting brought together 55 ASPnet students and teachers from 4 countries (Andorra, Portugal, Spain and United States of America) to launch the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity with students and a teacher from each country presenting their research on topics including Evolution, Biodiversity and Sustainability, Sustainability of the Systems of Animal Production, Public Health and Fight Against Poverty and Protected Areas and Biodiversity Maintenance.
