22 May 2010 - International Day for Biodiversity
To mark the International Day of Biodiversity, students and scientists alike explored the grounds of Rudininku on 29 May. Scientists spent a 24 hour period looking to identify as many species found in the area as possible. Although Rudininku was formerly an army training site from 1945 to 1980, today the natural biodiversity of the region has been restored. Local officials are hoping to build a “natural history trail” in which visitors would be able to not only learn about the various species found in the park but also about the park’s history. PAN Parks welcomes the declaration of the International Year of Biodiversity as we also look to the opportunities triggered by natural succession and ecosystem dynamics to protect global biodiversity. In PAN Parks Wilderness areas, the priority is protecting ecosystem dynamics and supporting the protection of biodiversity - ecosystem dynamics link.

Many examples of this could be provided so a page on our website will be devoted to providing a collection of case studies, interviews, articles on the relation of wilderness and biodiversity and the PAN Parks efforts to protect biodiversity through wilderness protection.
