A new a solar power water supply system has been installed for Yasawa I Rara Village, Yasawa Islands, Fiji
In 2002, Seacology funded the construction of a community center in Yasawa I Rara, a remote village located in the northern portion of the Yasawa Islands in Fiji's western region. In exchange, the villagers agreed to prohibit any development on the communally-held islands of Yalewakalou and Yawini Ciri, as well as establishing a no-take fishing reserve on the 80 square mile area surrounding the islands.
As it rarely rains on Yasawa, the village recently approached Seacology to help provide reliable access to fresh water. Seacology facilitated the purchase and installation of a solar water pump system for the community center in support of the community's continued adherence to protecting the islands and the no-take provisions of the fishing reserve. As of March 2010 Seacology field representative Harry Powell reports that the system is completed and fully functional. |
Seacology is an international nonprofit, nongovernmental organization whose sole purpose is to preserve the environments and biodiversity of islands globally. Seacology has created an innovative model of island conservation and community development that has proven to successfully protect threatened island ecosystems, engage local stakeholders in modern conservation trends, promote international cooperation and dialogue, and ensure long-term benefits to rural island communities and the increasingly precious environments that surround them. To-date, Seacology has funded 199 projects on islands around the globe, preserving 1,812,720 acres of coral reef and marine ecosystems and 161,477 acres of terrestrial habitat. There remains much more work to be done, and Seacology intends to continue our legacy of success through additional innovative, grassroots programs aimed at preserving the world's most endangered ecosystems throughout 2010.
