Estonian final report on the celebrations of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
Estonia has celebrated the International Year of Biodiversity as well as 100th anniversary of nature conservation when its first protected area was created. The document has a list of activities including those especially planned for the International Year of Biodiversity or connected to biodiversity.
Biodiversity will be the theme of a new series on national television.
International Day for Biodiversity Between 14 and 15 May, scientists, university students and primary school children came to Tartu to visit the Emajogi River. The Biodiversity Action Day was part of the school children’s Biology and Geography curriculum. Throughout the day as the students were exploring the area, an emphasis was placed on teaching the children how all the species are interconnected. For instance, they were told about how the earthworms need the leaves on the ground to live, and in turn, the hedgehogs and moles eat the worms. Thus, each species is important in maintaining the functioning of the region’s ecosystem.
